History

2007

On April the 26th 2007, Sasha and Sumeet Nagdev established the Expressions Modern Dance Company (EMDC), which was based at the Expressions Dance & Fitness Studios in Dadar. The studios housed many guest faculty and teachers. Sumeet, who was a college student during this period, was also an upcoming choreographer and performer. He was given the opportunity to appear on television as a choreographer on a Star Plus dance programme Nach Baliye 3.More importantly, it was during this time that Sumeet was offered a scholarship to dance and study in Singapore with Tan How Choon and Chin Huat.

2008

In 2008, Expression’s studio became a popular landmark in Dadar. Hordes of students and dance lovers, many of whom had to be waitlisted, began training and auditioning in hopes of joining the company. Sumeet began working with and recruiting more advanced dancers for EMDC. The company showcased two successful productions, ‘Enlighten’ in June, and ‘Spark’ in December, with ‘Spark’ going on to become an annual students’ production. Sumeet was offered a scholarship from the Martha Graham Dance Company and left to study in New York in December

2009

Due to the rising success of EMDC, they renovated the Expressions Studios in 2009. The space was transformed into 1700sqft and all classes were independently run by Sumeet. The official company was formed and began performing showcases and events all over India. In April 2009, EMDC introduced a dance festival called ‘Ahsas.’ This was the premiere performance for the official EMDC dancers since being formed by Sumeet. Mr Steve Rooks former dancer of the Martha Graham Dance Company from New York also performed at the festival. The festival Ahsas continued for five years.

2010

2010 saw developments in the structure of the company. Sumeet introduced the part-time and full-time diploma courses, whereby a student could register for one or two years to study a professional dance programme. Sumeet was selected as an international choreographer in residence for the American Dance Festival at Duke University.

EMDC was renamed to Sumeet Nagdev Dance Arts or SNDA as the company started performing at dance festivals across India.

2011

This year marked SNDA’s first full-length production called ‘’Gandhi is Alive,’ which premiered on the 30th January. It was performed in many different cities and at the US consulate. The production received mixed reviews, and critical feedback which was helpful for the development of the company and the artists.

In Feb 2011, Sumeet was also invited to be a guest choreographer for the British Dance Edition in UK.

2012

The popularity of Ahsas grew, and included performances by many guest artists.

The company created many small-scale as well as touring productions including ‘Rainbow Chakras,’ ‘Rise’ and ‘Saki Naka.’ The company also received a visit from American choreographer and teacher Steve Rooks who led workshops with the students.

2013

The solo-production ‘Talkative Dancer’ was created in 2013 and received much critical acclaim. It travelled to Europe and USA and top Indian critics identified Sumeet as a path breaking artist in India. The company also performed their production Rise at various venues. Sumeet also choreographed ads and music videos in this year.

2014

2014 was a year of change for SNDA. The studios went into renovation for nine months. As a result, both the academy and the company was dissolved. Sumeet performed as a soloist in ‘Talkative Dancer,’ and ended up touring in eight cities across Europe and America during June. The performance met with rave reviews. In the last month of 2014, new dance artists were recruited to be part of the new company. The company performed a musical at NCPA for the Fiscal Association of the World Conference.

2015

The company and academy were re-established again at the beginning of 2015. The company worked on a television project for 4 months wherein Sumeet appeared as a judge for the first time. Sumeet even choreographed various television promos, music videos and ad films

2016

Internationally acclaimed production ‘Dhrut’ was created in 2016. The company was given the opportunity to travel to New York, and also perform ‘Dhrut’ at multiple cities across India. The critics lauded Dhrut and it became another high-point in the company’s growth.

2017

SNDA celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2017. To celebrate, various renowned dance artists and choreographers were brought in to teach dance workshops. There was a hip-hop workshop with James Morrow, an aerial silk workshop with Brande lee, a dance therapy workshop with Tripura Kashyap, a breaking and contemporary dance workshop with 2faced Dance Company, Graham Technique workshop with Steve Rooks and a master class with Sumeet Nagdev.

SNDA also celebrated with four performances including ‘Trishna,’ ‘Kathak Baithak,’ the annual SNDA Student Showcase and ‘Dashanan.’ ‘Dhrut’ also continued to tour and perform. 2017 turned out to be the busiest calendar year for the company as well as the academy. Our academy students also won many awards and performed at various festivals in Mumbai. Sumeet even directed Music Videos and got the opportunity to choreograph 2 bollywood film projects. The company started planning a large full length production titled ‘Jan-Jaati’ for 2018 premiere.

PROJECT AHSAS

(Non Profit)

Project Ahsas is an initiative established by Sumeet Nagdev Dance Arts (SNDA) in 2007, and functions to support the artistic development of less privileged students by making dance education affordable and available to them. With this project, SNDA strives to impart quality dance education and bring the dance world together, free of any discrimination. Over 1000 children have benefited through this project to date.

Under SNDA, Project Ahsas offers full and part scholarships to students who possess the potential to pursue dance professionally. In the past, SNDA has offered scholarships to children from the slums of Dharavi, Antop Hill and Govandi.

Project AHSAS Scholars as an exchange of energy share their knowledge of dance with differently able societies or homes which host children who are physically or socially challenged or even at risk. The program runs through the help and support of our donors other than the assistance by SNDA faculty and artists.
